The first step in tying any fly is to lay down a layer of thread along the hook shank to serve as a foundation. Place the hook in your vise. Hold the bobbin in your right hand. Pull a few inches of thread from the bobbin and hold the loose end in your left hand. Place the thread at an angle at the point on the hook shank where the thread layer should start, usually two eye widths from the eye. Wrap the thread around the hook shank. As you make your first turn around the hook, catch the first wrap underneath the second and wind toward the rear of the hook. The wraps will cover the loose end of the thread in your left hand. After you have made several wraps, stop and cut the loose, tag end.
