Triangle Bug

The Triangle Bug is a foam panfish fly that is quick and east to tie. The shape of the fly also makes it harder for the fish to swallow, provided the fishes mouth is not too large

 

This fly is tied on a Lightening Strike SN3 2XH 3XlL hook size 10. The tying thread is 8-0 black. Olive Marabou is used for the tail. The legs are round rubber. The body is 2mm green foam cut on a laser engraver. You can hand cut the bodies but the laser cut bodies are quicker and each one is identical. I will send you a block of 10 bodies for a SASE. To tie this fly, place the hook in your vice and attach the tying thread. Place the marabou on the top of the hook using  a soft loop to keep the material on top of he hook.  Wrap to the bend of the hook and return the thread to mid shank. The tail should be about the length of the shank of the hook.

Your fly should look like this. (The tail is a little long.)

Next attach a pair if rubber legs using a figure of eight. The legs should stick straight out from the shank at 90 degrees.

The precut bodies have a small hole in the center of the foam. Insert the eye of the hook into the hole.

Wrap the tying thread back to the bend of the hook. Next fold the bottom of the body back and secure at the bebd of the hook using 2-3 loose turns of thread.

Add a small drop of superglue to the hook shank and rubber legs.  I like thick superglue. It doesn’t cure as quickly as thin glue.  It also doesn’t flow all over the fly body running off the sides affecting the rubber legs and gluing your fingers together or to the fly. Fold the body over the top of the hook shank and attach with tying thread using tight turns. Whip finish. Separate the two strand of the rubber legs and trim to length. Your fly should now look like this.

Hold the top and bottom of the foam body together until the glue drys. This may take a while if you used thick superglue.  I modified a close pin to clamp the pieces together. Unmodified the close pin puts too much pressure on the foam over compressing it. To modify the close pin sand off the front until it is flat.
