As I said in my previous Post, I like going to Fly Fishing shows. Michael Ames and I just returned from FlyFest 2025 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This show was billed as a gathering of fly fishers and was a big success. The first in person gathering since covid. Although it was not as big as some pre covid shows, it was well attended. As usual I saw a lot of old friends and made new ones.
The meeting had about 50% tiers and 50% casters, both instructors and those testing, as well as interested fishermen. As usual I learned something.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ann R, Miller an author and tier. She is an aquatic biologist who lives in southwest Michigan. Ann wrote the Pocketguide to Upper Midwest Hatches published by Stackpole Books. She breaks down the book into sections describing Mayflies , Caddis, Stoneflies and others. Each insect is described as an adult, pupa as appropriate, and larva all with pictures. She also includes appropriate pictures of flies used to imitate them. As a bonus the last section list recipes for the flies. The compact design makes it perfect to carry in your pocket—easy to read even for my old eyes. I wholeheartedly recommend this guide to any fly fisher eager to understand what insects fish are feasting on and the perfect fly to match each one. It’s a must-have!
